Reading for PleasureReading for Pleasure

This year is the National Year of Reading and we are delighted to be one of 25 schools across the country who have been accepted into the UKLA/OU Quality Mark programme, which recognises and rewards schools that have developed, embedded and enriched their Reading for Pleasure (RfP) culture and ethos.

As part of our evidence-gathering and to continue to strengthen our offer in the wider community, we would really appreciate it if you could fill in this a short survey to help us understand the extent to which we are engaging parents with 'Reading for Pleasure' at Fern Hill. Thank you very much for your support.

Solutions for the PlanetThe E-Waste Race is on!

Fern Hill is currently 4th out of all the participating schools in the borough and we are very keen to collect as much as we can and win the prize worth up to £1,500! We are collecting until Thursday 12th June so please do bring in anything you have a home next week.

Fern Hill has signed up to the E-Waste Race, a school-based environmental competition designed to increase the collection and responsible recycling of small electrical and electronic waste (WEEE). It combines environmental education, community engagement, and circular economy awareness with a time-limited competition between schools.

If you have any small broken or unwanted electrical items at home, please drop them in our E-Waste recycling bin in the school main reception area. We are collecting small household electronics and appliances, electrical toys, cables and chargers, keyboards and computer accessories. Thank you to our Eco-Committee who will be sorting and logging everything you bring in.

PSA Annual General Meeting

Fern Hill PSA will be holding their AGM on Thursday 2nd July, at 7:00 pm, in person at school. Please come and join them as they review the year and present the accounts, as well as looking ahead to another exciting year in 2026/2027.

They will also be holding elections for all Committee roles. In particular, they have the following vacancies next year which they need to fill in order for the charity to operate:

- Secretary/Trustee

- Independent Examiner

They would also love to hear from anyone keen to join their chair, Jenny, as co-chair next year. Please email fernhillpsa@gmail.com with any questions ahead of the meeting.

Bike RideHappy World Bicycle Day!

To celebrate Bike Week and encourage people to have fun discovering new local routes, Kingston Cycling Campaign and Full Cycle Community Bike Project are inviting residents of all ages to join our next free family-friendly ride on Sunday 14th June.

Starting from Latchmere Recreation Ground, this gentle-paced 6.5-mile ride will explore some of North Kingston's cycle-friendly routes, from the Thames towpath to Richmond Park. Designed for all ages and cycling abilities, the ride is a great way to build confidence, meet new people and discover local routes in a relaxed and supportive environment.

With marshals keeping everyone safe, Full Cycle volunteers will also be providing free Dr Bike-style TLC before and after the ride, while Friends of Latchmere Recreation Ground will be offering bike security marking.

Book of the Week

Shrapnel Boys‘Shrapnel Boys’ by Jenny Pearson

Shortlisted for the Spark! Book Award 2026

When the bombs start falling on London, Ronnie and his friends become 'shrapnel boys' scouring the streets for the most exciting pieces of shrapnel - bonus points if they're still warm. Ronnie's little brother, Micky, is doing part time work for their mum's new friend, Johnny Simmons, but Ronnie is worried what they're doing might be illegal and he's frustrated that he's the only one in his family who seems to see through Johnny's charming personality. But perhaps the only way to expose Johnny, is to get involved in his schemes.

'Shrapnel Boys' is a vivid, entertaining and engaging piece of historical fiction. But this book also deals with vulnerable teen boys being radicalised by charismatic chancers and empowers young readers to question what they're told by celebrities and online influencers. And it does all of these things without being preachy, in the context of a thrilling, page-turning plot. Highly recommended.
