Reminders

Illness
If your child is unwell and will be absent from school, please inform us by 8:30 am on each day of absence. You can email the school office at office@fernhillprimary.org or call 020 8247 0300. If the office is busy, you may be put through to the answerphone. Please do leave a message and tell us the nature of your child's illness and the symptoms they have.

Year Group Weekly News
Don't forget to check the Google Classroom for your year group's weekly update and any important reminders from your teachers for next week.

Don't forget your coat!
With the cooler, and wetter weather, please ensure your child brings a warm, waterproof coat to school. At break and lunchtimes, we encourage the children to play outside as much as possible, even in light rain. The school office would be very grateful for donations of coats that your children have outgrown, to lend to those who come to school without one. Thank you.

For safety reasons, please do not ride scooters or bikes anywhere on the school site. This includes the foothpath and playgrounds. Adults and children should dismount before entering the school site at the Richmond Road entrance. If you drive to school, please may we remind you that the car park is for the use of Fern Hill and TKA staff only and to park considerately on the roads neighbouring the school. Thank you.

World Food Day & Kingston Foodbank Donations

To mark World Food Day on Thursday 16th October, and support our local community, we will be collecting non-perishable foods for the Kingston Foodbank. Donations can be dropped off from Monday morning and left outside school reception. Click here for a list of items the Foodbank is most in need of right now. We will be accepting donations all week and, on Wednesday 15th October, our Year 6 prefects will accompany Mrs Davies to the Kingston Foodbank to drop your donations off.

World Food DayWorld Food Day is celebrated around the world on the 16th October - the date that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FOA) was founded in 1945. First commemorated in 1979, World Food Day aims to promote healthy diets and eradicate hunger issues. The theme for 2025 is 'Right to foods for a better life and a better future'. This is based on the fact that the world's farmers produce enough food to feed more than the global population, but hunger is still an issue for so many.

Parents' Evening

Parents' Evening will be held on Monday 20th October from 4:00-7:00 pm and Tuesday 21st October from 2:00-6:00 pm. You can now book a 10-minute in-person appointment with your class teacher through our Parents’ Evening System. The booking window will close at midday on Monday 13th October. A parents’ guide on how to book an appointment is available here. If you are scheduling an appointment for more than one child, please leave a suitable time gap between appointments.

SEND reviews will be held in November. If your child has SEND, please book a Parents' Evening appointment and we will let you know the date and time of your review in due course.

On Tuesday 21st October, school will close for children in Reception through to Year 6. Tree Tops will run from this time until its usual finish. There are no after school clubs running on either Monday 20th or Tuesday 21st October.

For any questions regarding booking a Parents' Evening appointment, please contact the school office.

Flu ImmunisationFlu Immunisation

On Thursday 9th October, the School Health Immunisation Team will be in school to administer the flu vaccine. This is available to all children from Reception to Year 6 and will be given in the form of a nasal spray vaccine, or as an injectable porcine free vaccine.

Please see this linked letter from the Immunisation Team for further information, including a link to their electronic consent form. You must provide your consent in order for your child to have the vaccine and the closing date for giving consent is Monday 6th October. All questions about vaccine suitability, and whether your child can have it on the day if unwell, should be directed to the Immunisation Team (contact details in the linked letter).

PunctualityPunctuality & School Absence

Please may we remind you of the importance of children being on time and settled in their classrooms before the start of the school day. The first 10–15 minutes of the morning are used for revisiting key skills such as handwriting, spelling, reading, times tables and arithmetic, which pupils start before the registers are taken.

Children may go straight to class once their playground gates are opened at 8:40 am; class registers are taken at 8:50 am when the playground gates are locked. Children arriving after the gates are locked should go directly to school reception to be signed in. Arrivals after 8:55 am are marked as late. Further information on the timing of the school day can be found here.

All planned absences, including those for religious observance and holidays, should be requested in advance using this linked Request for Absence Form which is also available to download from the school website here. The school office can provide a paper copy on request. This form is reviewed by Mr Scott who can grant an authorised leave of absence in exceptional circumstances.

For further information, please refer to our Attendance Policy.

InclusionInclusion Coffee Morning

Ms MacDougall, our new SENCO and Inclusion Lead, will be holding a meet and greet coffee morning next Friday 10th October from 9:00 - 9:45 am. We hope many of you will be available to join us. If you plan to attend, please register using this linked form

Gardening Day

On Saturday 11th October, Mrs Dutra will be holding a Gardening Day at school from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, to ready the gardens for winter and would love as many families as possible to come along and help. Refreshments will be provided. If you have any gardening hand tools and gloves, please do bring them with you! Thank you for your support.

Parent CouncilParent Council

To improve communication between home and school, and ensure that the needs of our community are taken into account when making key strategic decisions, the Senior Leadership Team works closely with the Parent Council. The Parent Council meets with Mr Scott twice every term to discuss different aspects of school life and they are currently recruiting new members for this school year, ideally two representatives from each class. If you would like to be the voice of your class, or would just like to find out more about what the Parent Council does, please get in touch with them via by email to parentcouncil@fernhillprimary.org or through the school office. You can read their last newsletter, which focuses on the arts provision at Fern Hill, here.

Class Assemblies

Click here for the dates of all our class assemblies this school year. Assemblies are held in the Large Hall. Entry and exit to the Large Hall will be via the external doors (past the black gates by school reception) and not through the school building. Assemblies will be recorded and uploaded to the Google Classroom, for families to watch together at home.

Book of the Week

The Scream of the Whistle'The Scream of the Whistle' by Emily Randall-Jones

When 12-year-old Ruby's parents split up, she moves into her Grandma's house in a creepy abandoned railway village called Melbridge with her mum and brother. Ruby is sure that if she can just get her parents back in the same room together she can get them to reconcile, so she hatches a plan to walk back home along the abandoned railway line and orchestrate a family reunion. When she encounters the mysterious Green Lady steam train, the conductor offers her a lift instead. But there's something strange about the train and soon Ruby realises that she's trapped on a one-way trip towards disaster.

'The Scream of the Whistle' is a thrilling and emotive horror story about a girl dealing with the supernatural fallout from a historical train crash while she processes her parents divorce. I'm frequently asked for scary stories in the library and I think this one will go down particularly well in upper KS2 - a time slip story with a sinister steam train, ghosts, and an accessible length at 230 pages.
