Reminders

Absent or late for school?
If your child is ill or absent from school for any other reason, or if they are going to be late, please let the school office know by 8:30 am at the latest. The easiest way of doing this is by email to office@fernhillprimary.org or telephone on 020 8247 0300. Please leave a message on the answerphone if no one answers your call – staff are there, but busy, and your message will be picked up.

School lunches
If your child would like a school lunch, please place the order through ParentPay by 8:00 am on the day. To avoid missing the deadline, we recommend that you order your child’s lunches well in advance - you can cancel or amend your orders up until 8:00 am on the day too. There are two special theme days this half-term - Children in Need on Friday 13th November and Christmas Lunch on Wednesday 16th December.

Term Dates

Term dates for the 2027/2028 school year are published on the website here.

PoppiesRemembrance

Next week, children and staff will commemorate Remembrance and the whole school will observe a two-minute silence at 11:00 am on Wednesday 11th November, which is Armistice Day.

Thank you to our Year 6 children who have been selling poppies this week - and to all the families who have generously donated to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal. We will continue to sell poppies on Monday and Tuesday next week at both drop off and pick up.

Drop off and dismissal

From Monday, the gate across the path running next to the Secret Garden and Forest Fun area that connects the KS1 and KS2 playgrounds will be locked at drop off and pick up times and families will not be able to access the KS2 playground directly from the KS1 playground. This is to safeguard KS2 children who are present and active in the KS2 playground at these times. The staggered dismissal times for Reception, KS1 and KS2 allows for movement between both playgrounds via the pedestrian path between Fern Hill and The Kingston Academy.

Don't forget your coat!

With the colder weather, please ensure that your child brings a warm, waterproof coat to school every day. Unless it is very wet, children spend their breaktime and lunchtime play outside. Please make sure that coats (and hats, gloves and scarves) are clearly labelled with your child's name. For outdoor PE, children should now be wearing black tracksuits or black jogging bottoms and a long sleeved black jumper or jacket, not just shorts and a t-shirt.

Punctuality & Planned Absence

Please may we remind you of the importance of children being on time and settled in their classrooms before the start of the school day. The first 10–15 minutes of the morning are used for revisiting key skills such as handwriting, spelling, reading, times tables and arithmetic, which pupils start before the registers are taken.

Children may go straight to class once their playground gates are opened at 8:40 am; class registers are taken at 8:50 am when the playground gates are locked. Children arriving after the gates are locked should go directly to school reception to be signed in. Arrivals after 8:55 am are marked as late. Further information on the timing of the school day can be found here.

All planned absences, including those for religious observance, examinations and term-time holidays, should be requested in advance using the relevant request for absence form. These forms are online and are linked on the school website here.

If your child has a dental or medical appointment, you do not need to complete a form but please do inform us in advance by emailing the school office and attaching evidence of the appointment, for example a screenshot of the confirmation text.

Google ClassroomHome Learning

Don't forget to check the Google Classroom for your year group's weekly update and any important reminders from your teachers for next week.

This half-term's Home Learning Grids for Years 1 - 6 are posted on the Classroom, along with other home learning resources. Children will share their home learning pieces with their year group and teachers during the Home Learning Showcase on Friday 11th December.

Lost Property

A lost property box is located just inside the entrance of the school. Please check this box for lost items before contacting the school office. We will always endeavour to return items to their owner, so please make sure everything your child brings to school is clearly named (first name and surname), including water bottles and packed lunch containers. Items not collected by the end of every half-term are sent for recycling or disposed of.

Children in Need 3.jpgFundraising for the BBC Children in Need Appeal

Next Friday 13th November, we'll be supporting the BBC Children in Need Appeal with a fundraising mufti day - the children don't need to wear school uniform, but we do hope they will take inspiration from Pudsey and go for yellow and spotty outfits! In return, we'll be asking for a donation to the Children in Need charity to help support vulnerable children in the UK and around the world.

This year, you can make a donation directly to Children in Need through ParentPay using our dedicated payment item; your donation will go straight to the charity.

From Tuesday next week, Year 6 children will be selling Pudsey pin badges and wristbands in the morning and after school for £1 (cash only). Please note that there is a limited number available and last year, they sold out very quickly.

Book Fair 2School Book Fair

We will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the last week of November, just in time for your Christmas shopping! And, as usual, all purchases will earn rewards towards buying new books for our school. The fair will be open from 3:30 - 4:30 pm in the Junior Library on Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th November. You can browse the books that will be available on the Travelling Books website here.

Book Fair Poster Competition

We also have some book fair vouchers available to win for the best posters advertising the fair, including the details above and showcasing your child's favourite books and book characters. Posters can be delivered to class teachers or left on Mrs Rouillard's desk in the Junior Library and all entries must be handed in by 9:00 am on Tuesday 17th November. Please remind your children to put their name and class on the back of their poster. Good luck!

NHSMissed the flu vaccine?
