Reminders

Illness
If your child is unwell and will be absent from school, please inform us by 8:30 am on each day of absence. You can email the school office at office@fernhillprimary.org or call 020 8247 0300. If the office is busy, you may be put through to the answerphone. Please do leave a message and tell us the nature of your child's illness and the symptoms they have.

Year group weekly news
Don't forget to check the Google Classroom for your year group's weekly update and any important reminders from your teachers for next week.

Safety on the school site
For safety reasons, please do not ride scooters or bikes anywhere on the school site. This includes the foothpath and playgrounds. Adults and children should dismount before entering the school site at the Richmond Road entrance. Thank you.

Home Learning 2

Home Learning

Home Learning activities for children in Years 1 to 6 for this half-term are due in school by Friday 16th October in time for the Home Learning Showcase. Your child's Home Learning Grid and any supporting resources are published on their Google Classroom.

Flu ImmunisationsFlu Immunisations

On Tuesday 6th October, the School Health Immunisation Team will be in school to administer the flu vaccine. This is available to all children from Reception to Year 6 and will be given in the form of a nasal spray vaccine, or as an injectable porcine free vaccine.

Please see this letter from the Immunisation Team for further information and a link to their electronic consent form. You must provide your consent in order for your child to have the vaccine and the closing date for giving consent is Monday 5th October.

The Immunisation Team has made a short video for parents to share with their children to help them understand what to expect and reassure them about the vaccination process.

All questions about vaccine suitability, and whether your child can have it on the day if unwell, should be directed to the Immunisation Team - please see the linked letter above for their contact details.

Parents' Evenings

Parents' Evenings will be held over the last week of this half-term from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st October. You will be able to book a 10-minute in-person appointment with your class teacher through our Parents’ Evening System from next week and further information will be sent out via ParentPay shortly.

SEND reviews will be held either during Parents' Evening or after the half-term break. If your child has SEND, you will be informed of the date and time by the Inclusion team directly.

On Wednesday 21st October, school will close for children in Reception through to Year 6 at 1:30 pm. Tree Tops will run from this time until its usual finish. There are no after school clubs running during the week of 19th October.

Class Assemblies

Click here for the dates of all our class assemblies this school year. Assemblies are held in the Large Hall. Entry and exit to the Large Hall will be via the external doors (past the black gates by school reception) and not through the school building. Assemblies will be recorded and uploaded to the Google Classroom, for families to watch together at home.

Punctuality & Planned Absence

Please may we remind you of the importance of children being on time and settled in their classrooms before the start of the school day. The first 10–15 minutes of the morning are used for revisiting key skills such as handwriting, spelling, reading, times tables and arithmetic, which pupils start before the registers are taken.

Children may go straight to class once their playground gates are opened at 8:40 am; class registers are taken at 8:50 am when the playground gates are locked. Children arriving after the gates are locked should go directly to school reception to be signed in. Arrivals after 8:55 am are marked as late. Further information on the timing of the school day can be found here.

All planned absences, including those for religious observance, examinations and term-time holidays, should be requested in advance using the relevant request for absence form. These forms are online and are linked on the school website here.

If your child has a dental or medical appointment, you do not need to complete a form but please do inform us in advance by emailing the school office and attaching evidence of the appointment, for example a screenshot of the confirmation text.

InclusionParent Coffee Morning: Discover Skylarks!

We are hosting a Coffee Morning for parents and carers on Friday 16th October at 9:00 am to introduce Skylarks, a local charity dedicated to supporting children and young people with additional needs and disabilities, along with their families. This is a great opportunity to learn about the wide range of support, therapies, and inclusive activities Skylarks offers for children, young people, and their siblings. You will also discover how parents and carers can access SEND/EHCP advice, workshops, and peer support groups.

Highlights of Skylarks services include:

● No formal diagnosis, EHCP, or referral required to access support.
● Support for the whole family: Activities, play sessions, and therapies tailored for children and their siblings.
● Parent & Carer Resources: Expert guidance on education, workshops, peer networks, and signposting.

Come along for a hot drink, meet the Skylarks team, ask questions, and connect with other parents - all welcome!

Consent for Local Educational Visits

At Fern Hill we aim to provide regular opportunities for the children to enjoy outdoor and off-site learning, including curriculum linked educational visits.

To streamline the organisation of educational visits and reduce the administration for our families, we ask that you complete a general consent form at the start of the school year. General consent is for the whole school year and covers local visits only – visits within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames or those where the children will travel by foot to their destination, walking for a maximum duration of 45 minutes. Such visits will of course have the appropriate staff supervision and risk assessment.

We will continue to notify you in advance of the details of visits covered by general consent including anything your child will need, e.g. a packed lunch, but you will not be required to complete a separate consent form. Separate consent will still be required for visits that are not local, or for which we are asking for a voluntary monetary contribution.

Please click on the link below to complete and submit the general consent form. If you have more than one child at Fern Hill, you should complete a separate consent form for each child.

Parent CouncilParent Council

Is your class represented on the school’s Parent Council? Would you like to be part of the school’s Parent Voice?

To improve communication between home and school, and ensure that the needs of our community are taken into account when making key strategic decisions, the Senior Leadership Team works closely with the Parent Council. The Parent Council meets with Mr Scott twice every term to discuss different aspects of school life and they are recruiting new members for this school year, ideally two representatives from each class. If you would like to be the voice of your class, or would just like to find out more about what the Parent Council does, please get in touch with them via by email to parentcouncil@fernhillprimary.org or through the school office.

Their next meeting is on Thursday 8th October at 9:00 am. You can read their last newsletter, which focuses on communication, here.

Parent Volunteers

We are holding two briefing sessions for parents and carers interested in volunteering in school on a regular basis, on Monday 19th October at 2:30 pm and Tuesday 20th October at 9:00 am. The briefing will cover the DBS check process and the safeguarding training required. Please look out for a letter coming home next week with more information.

Twos a CrowdBook of the Week

‘Two is a Crowd’ by Cath Howe

Hattie is looking forward to starting secondary school with her best friend and getting her own room, when one phone call changes everything. Her Mum's goddaughter, Seren, comes to live with them and suddenly Hattie's room becomes Seren's, she is in a class with Seren instead of her friend and, worst of all, everyone in her family seems to like Seren more than her. Hattie is loud and resentful, and the more aggrieved she feels, the more she acts out and drives everyone further away from her. Under the circumstances, it's easy to understand how Hattie's parents feel compelled to focus on Seren, but it's also incredibly easy to empathise with Hattie's authentically self-absorbed perspective.

Cath Howe is brilliant at viewing the world through the eyes of a child and writing about characters experiencing difficult circumstances with warmth and affection. 'Two is a Crowd' is another poignant and engaging story with an uplifting resolution.

Jenny PearsonJenny Pearson Author Visit to KS2

Last week, we had a thrilling school visit from the piratical Jenny Pearson. She recruited us all to her pirate crew, we played some pirate games and she taught us how NOT to be a pirate. Thanks Jenny for a timber-shiveringly great time!

If you missed the book sale after school, we still have some signed copies of Jenny's new book 'How Not to be a Pirate' available - watch out for further details of how to order via ParentPay.

Here's what some of our Year 5 children had to say after the visit:

‘I loved, loved your book. I really want to read it and all your games were fantastic. Thank you for coming to Fern Hill.’ Sabella

‘Amazing book visit full of expression and energy.’ Karv

'I really liked the activities and the fun pirate games that she played.’ Taarini

‘I like the sound of the book and I bought it. Also, the games were really fun.’ Phoebe

I really liked the activities and I liked how she read us some of the book.’ Penny

Cauliflower CardsCauliflower Cards

Once again we are working with a company called Cauliflower Cards, to offer the children the opportunity to design their own Festive cards that will be professionally printed and delivered back to school. Every order you place raises valuable funds for the school.

Their design doesn’t need to be festive – they may like to make thank you cards or cards for other occasions.

This week the children will have brought home a Cauliflower Cards pack that includes an order form and a sheet of A4 paper on which they create their design. Orders should be placed online, following the instructions on the order form. The sheet of paper with their design should be GLUED to the order form and returned to your child’s class teacher.

The deadline for placing an order online and returning artwork is Friday 16th October.
