If your child is unwell and will be absent from school, please inform us by 8:30 am on each day of absence. You can email the school office at: office@fernhillprimary.org or call 020 8247 0300. If the office is busy, you may be put through to the answerphone. Please do leave a message. When you leave a message, please tell us the nature of their illness and the symptoms they have.

Year Group Weekly News
Don't forget to check the Google Classroom for your year group's weekly update and any important reminders for next week.

Staying safe in hot weather
With the very warm and sunny weather forecast for next week, please ensure that your child brings a sun hat (wide brimmed if possible) and refillable water bottle to school every day. Water bottles should be plastic or stainless steel and not glass to avoid breakages. Sunscreen should be applied at home, before school. Further information on staying safe in hot weather is available here.

Safety & Parking

For safety reasons, please do not ride scooters or bikes anywhere on the school site including the car park and pedestrian area running between the Fern Hill and The Kingston Academy schools. Adults and children should dismount before entering the site at the Richmond Road entrance. Please may we also remind you to park considerately. We have had a number of complaints from local residents recently regarding cars parked at drop off and pick up times that are blocking their driveways. Thank you.

PMG

Appointments with our uniform supplier are available to book now with a cut-off date of 12th August for ordering for the start of the autumn term. Please see the website here for further information on our school uniform.

Last day of schoolTuesday 22nd July is the last day of term. It is a mufti day and the children may wear their own clothes to school - but no football kits please! School closes early, and we are staggering dismissal to ensure the children can be collected promptly.

Years 3 – 6 at 1:25 pm

Please note that Tree Tops will run a single session until 4:30 pm only.

Open AfternoonYoure invited

On Friday 18th July, we are holding our Open Afternoon. School will be open after dismissal from 3:15–4:00 pm for you to come into the classroom with your child to say goodbye to your teacher and look at your child’s books to share their learning together. You will also have the opportunity to view the wonderful artwork the children have created over our Arts Fortnight. We hope to see you then!

Fern Hill Arts FortnightArts Trail

Fern Hill Arts Fortnight began this week and the children have been working hard on their collaborative pieces. Our Art leads, Miss Ross and Miss Phillips, have put together a fantastic local trail for families to follow to explore all of the exciting artwork we have right here on our doorstep.

The trail begins at Eden Street with a suggested route around Kingston town centre that will take around one hour to complete. You can find all the details here. If you have a go at any of the suggested activities, please bring them into school to share with us!

School Absence

Please may we remind you that all planned absences, including those for religious observance and holidays, should be requested in advance using the linked Request for Absence Form which is also available to download from the school website here. The school office can provide a paper copy on request. This form is reviewed by Mr Scott who can grant an authorised leave of absence in exceptional circumstances.

For further information, please refer to our Attendance Policy

Summer Reading ChallengeSummer reading challenge

We hope the children will continue reading throughout the summer holidays and we'd like to remind you about the National Summer Reading Challenge - you can take part online or through your local library.

We also have a Fern Hill Summer Reading Challenge which is being sent home with pupils this week. The children should choose the best book they're read over the summer break, complete the booklet and return it to school in September to receive a Summer Reading Challenge certificate and contribute their ideas towards our library book shopping list for next year. We look forward to hearing all about their summer reading!

Parent Council XLParent Council

Our amazing Parent Council are recruiting new members for the new school year! They meet with Mr Scott every half term to share thoughts and opinions on aspects of school life and ideally need two representatives from each class. If you would like to be the voice of your class, or would just like to find out more about what the Parent Council does, please get in touch with Clare and Natalie by email to parentcouncil@fernhillprimary.org or through the school office.

CameraClass Photographs

Class photographs are still available to order, although the deadline for free delivery to school before the end of term has now past. Delivery will be to your home address and charged at £3.50. Please use the class link and password sent via ParentPay to order.

Please return ALL library books

As it is nearly the end of term, we are collecting all library books in for the summer holidays. Please can you send your library books back to school by Thursday next week at the latest.

We realise that pupils sometimes leave a book in the classroom or put it back in the library without scanning it, so please let us know if you don't have the book. If you have lost a book, please let Mrs Rouillard know - a replacement copy or a £5 donation would be much appreciated.

After School & Lunchtime Clubs

This was the last full week of school clubs. All Monday clubs will run on 14th July, and there will be the following catch-up sessions:

Lego Robotics on Tuesday 15th; Spanish on Wednesday 16th; Magpie Makes Sewing on Thursday 17th; and French, Gymnastics and Karate on Friday 18th.

We are currently finalising clubs for the autumn term and hope to make them available for booking from 5:00 pm on Tuesday 15th July - please look out for a ParentPay email with further information.

Musical ExplorersKMS summer courses

Over the summer break, Kingston Music Service are offering 3 and 5 day courses for children currently in years 2-6 to explore a range of musical instruments and take part in creative art, craft, dance and movement. Beginners and experienced musicians are welcome (and if you learn an instrument, you can bring it along). You can find out more about the courses here. A number of funded FUEL places are also available.

Books of the Week

Boy and OctopusThe Boy and the Octopus

By Caryl Lewis & Carmen Saldana

Stanley loves to sleep with his toy octopus - it makes him feel safe. He also loves the way an octopus can camouflage itself to disappear, and he wishes he could do the same because he’s shy and finds it difficult to speak up for himself. But the octopus also shoots ink when it is threatened and so Stanley learns to express himself with words and images and to speak up rather than disappear.

‘The Boy and the Octopus’ is an empowering and thought-provoking picture book, perfect for KS1.

Family TreeEvie and Maryam's Family Tree

By Janeen Hayat

When London school girls, Evie and Maryam, are assigned to work together on a family tree project they make an incredible discovery - they each have a folder of letters written in code belonging to their great-grandmothers. As they work together to decipher the letters they reveal a story of a friendship across barriers between Kathy and Safia, starting in 1929 in Delhi and following the lead up to the independence and partition of India.

This is a wonderfully warm, inclusive and captivating story of friendship and reconciliation that explores historical events not often covered in British children’s fiction - highly recommended!
