Year Group Weekly News
Don't forget to check the Google Classroom for your year group's weekly update and any important reminders for next week.

Staying safe in hot weather
With the very warm and sunny weather forecast for the next few days, please ensure that your child brings a sun hat (wide brimmed if possible) and refillable water bottle to school every day. Water bottles should be plastic or stainless steel and not glass to avoid breakages. Sunscreen should be applied at home, before school. Further information on staying safe in hot weather is available here.

Home Learning 2

Home Learning

Home Learning activities for this final half-term are due by Friday 11th July in time for the Home Learning Showcase. Your child's Home Learning Grid and any supporting resources are published on their Google Classroom.

Sports DaySports Day

It was disappointing to have had to cancel Sports Day today. The decision was made in the interests of all our children and we are grateful for your understanding and support in this.

Sports Day will now be held next Friday 27th June which is the reserve date we planned at the start of the year. The timings of the day, including the logistics of dismissal for children in Years 3 to 6, will remain the same.

All school lunches ordered for Friday 27th June have been cancelled - except for children in Nursery.

Inclusion Coffee MorningInclusion

With Sports Day rescheduled for Friday 27th June, unfortunately the final Inclusion Community Coffee Morning of the school year will not run as planned. Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended these events throughout the year.

Fern Hill Art Fortnight

Fern Hill Art Fortnight will run from Monday 7th July and culminate in an open afternoon art display on Friday 18th July. The children will be creating collaborative pieces of artwork across their classes, to broaden their knowledge of culturally diverse modern artists and explore new techniques.

Year 2 are asking for donations of books that they can use for their art project. They need chapter books - appropriate for children and preferably with a large spine - that they will be painting. The books don’t have to be in good condition. If you have any to donate, please drop them off with the school office. Thank you!

School Absence

Please may we remind you that all planned absences, including those for religious observance and holidays, should be requested in advance using the linked Request for Absence Form which is also available to download from the school website here. The school office can provide a paper copy on request. This form is reviewed by Mr Scott who can grant an authorised leave of absence in exceptional circumstances.

For further information, please refer to our Attendance Policy

RLSSWater Safety!

The campaign is deliberately timed ahead of the school summer holidays when children spend more time outdoors when vital water safety skills can help keep them safe. To support you, the Royal Lifesaving Society have developed a range of free resources that make learning about water safety easy and fun for your family.

The London Fire Brigade’s website is also a useful source of information, and, with the current heatwave, you might also like to watch this water safety video produced by Richmond Council on swimming in the River Thames.

Books of the Week

Tide Magic

Tidemagic: Ista Flit and the Impossible Key

By Clare Harlow

‘Ista Flit and the Impossible Key’ is the sequel to ‘The Many Faces of Ista Flit’. In the first book Ista used her tide-blessing, the ability to adopt other people’s appearances and gifts, to save Shelwich from the sinister grilks and return all the missing people. Unfortunately her father is still missing and her only clue to his whereabouts is a mysterious key.

Book 2 opens when Ista uses the key to open a magical doorway to Glass Island, across the estuary from Shelwich. In addition to the human villagers, it is home to the marsh-spinners - dangerous shapeshifting creatures who can appear as humans or insects. Ista has always believed that the marsh spinners were just a bedtime story - luring humans with music to join their revel, but as soon as you taste the food or start to dance you would be trapped there forever. Ista’s quest takes her, and her friends Nat and Ruby, on a perilous journey into the heart of the Marsh Queen’s enchanted court to finally rescue her father.

‘Ista Flit and the Impossible Key’ is another captivating fantasy adventure, beautifully imagined and masterfully written, with lovely lyrical illustrations by Kristina Kister.

First YearThe First Year

By Matt Goodfellow, illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton

'The First Year' is the sequel to Matt Goodfellow's verse-novel, 'The Final Year', which was the winner of the 2024 Spark! Book Award. It begins with Nate's last day of Year 6 and covers his first year of high school. His little brother, Dylan, has recovered from his operation and is in good health but Nate is dealing with his old school bully from Year 6, an unsympathetic form tutor, and a new arrival who is upending his life.

Like 'The First Year', the text is organised in short, readable stanzas so, even though it is a longer book, it is still a very quick and engaging read. Once again, Matt Goodfellow beautifully captures Nate's conflicted emotions and the angry beast that threatens to burst out of him when he's under pressure, as well as the loving and supportive relationships between Nate, his Mum and his younger brothers. Nate's new friend, Muna, is also a great addition to their friend group. Another poignant and authentic read, perfect for upper KS2 pupils.

Many of Sarah Ziman’s poems are playing with words. From the increasingly muddled ‘Packed Lunch’ to riddles, misunderstandings, poems that can be read forward and backwards, and puzzle poems. Despite the whimsical tone, there are plenty of moments of sincere emotion - she beautifully captures the difficulties of navigating friendships at school, from the wonderful positive experiences in ‘Opposites’ and ‘Anticipation’ to the negative interactions we can all relate to in ‘One-Upper’ and ‘Copycat’. I also loved the inclusion of Welsh language, from the experience of learning Welsh as the new girl at school to ‘Tadcu’s Lemons’ - an entirely translated poem.

A playful, profound and authentic collection of poems - perfect for primary-aged children.
